Once he had finished answering questions posed by Canadian reporters Aaron Brown immediately turned his attention toward a dozen young volunteers lining the media mixed zone each holding out an item for him to sign. One by one they were granted their wish by the surprise world junior championship 200m bronze medalist.

Canadian Fans Celebrate Brown’s Bronze Medal by Paul Gains

Every Canadian in the stands friday night watched nervously as the results of the men’s 200m were posted, one at a time, on the giant scoreboard. And when Toronto’s Aaron Brown was acclaimed bronze medalist an enormous roar erupted from the stadium.

Running in lane 8, where he had no view of any of his competitors until the home straight, he is Canada’s second medalist of the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships.

Dexter Lee Disqualified in 200m heats by Paul Gains

Moments after being disqualified for a false start in the men’s 200m first round heats a smiling Dexter Lee stood before a handful of international media who’d braved the downpour to watch him run.

As he dried himself off with a towel the 2008 and 2010 World Junior 100m champion barely contained his laughter. But one had the sense it was an embarassed laughter what with all the expectations placed on his shoulders to attempt the 100-200m double here in Moncton.

Another Masai Family Champion By Paul Gains

Many fortunate enough to witness the men’s 10,000m final at the 2010 World Junior Championships were left stunned at the aggressive front running of Kenya’s Dennis Masai.

It was an awe inspiring performance by a young athlete with complete disregard for conventional racing which preaches even pace is the means to success. Despite this he still recorded the fastest time by a junior this year 27:53.88.

Taylor Stewart World Junior Bronze by Ashley Bursey

Since roughly ten o’clock last night, Taylor Stewart’s cell phone has been buzzing continuously.

That’s when the 19-year-old London, Ontario native took home Canada’s first medal at the World Junior Championships in Moncton and gave his teammates a tremendous psychological lift.

Kenya’s Dennis Masai Dominates 10,000m by Paul Gains

As promised the Kenyan distance runners put on quite an exhibition on the University of Moncton track tonight.

Dennis Chepkongin Masai won the 10,000m gold medal for his country with a new world leading time of 27:53.88 after a series of brutal surges crushed the opposition. When it was over only Gebretsadik Abraha of Ethiopia was able to stay close. So dominating was the Kenyan’s victory, that ten seconds separated the pair at the finish.

Kenya’s Cherono Defends World Title by Paul Gains

With Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper seated in the stands Kenya’s Mercy Cherono became the first gold medalist of the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships tonight when she held off a late sprint by Emebet Anteneh of Ethiopia and Layes Abdullayeva of Azerbaijan.

A near capacity crowd, the majority dressed in the Canadian colours, cheered the athletes down the homestretch as the medal order was in doubt until the final metres.
