Adopt a country program
As part of the Bell Aliant Get Active! School Program, all elementary and secondary schools in the Greater Moncton Area are invited to adopt one of the 170 countries which will be competing.
Participating classes and schools are invited to create a banner for their adopted country or countries. The banners will be displayed either at the Moncton International Airport for athletes to see as they arrive or at the Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium on the Université de Moncton campus as part of a welcome mural for participants. At the end of the Championships, athletes will be invited to take the banners home.
Post It
The purpose of this exercise is to practice communicating a message to someone via a postcard. Students should write about a day when they achieved something that is important to them (sport, drama, music, academics, etc.) and wish the athletes good luck. These postcards will be given to the athletes when they arrive. Students should also design a picture for the front of the card to reflect their written message.
Visitors’ Guide
In groups, students will examine travel brochures and will generate a list of information included in the brochures. The class will discuss and group information into relevant categories. Classes will then create their own visitors’ guides! These guides will be distributed to athletes for use during their stay in the Greater Moncton Area.
Fun Fit Passport
Each student in Districts 1, 2 and 11 interested in this program will receive a passport to keep track of their activities. The passport concept mimics the provincial government’s ‘In Motion’ strategy which uses physical activity and healthy eating as a means to improve the health of New Brunswick communities. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal goals for the program.
Mini-Moncton 2010
Mini-Moncton 2010 is designed to provide schools, teachers and leadership students with the tools necessary to host a mini-athletics event. Athletics, known locally as track and field, is a number of events which incorporate the three basic disciplines of running, jumping and throwing. The 2010 Championships will be comprised of 44 athletic events showcasing athletes’ abilities to perform at their highest levels. Mini-Moncton 2010 was built to give students and teachers an overview of what athletics are and the types of event that will be happening this summer in Moncton July 19th – 25th.
